From the 26th to the 28th of July, students and esports fans from across the province will gather at the UCT Sports Centre to compete in various esports titles at the ACGL Gaming Championship (AGC).

This is the first year this event will take place and aims to be the largest competitive gathering of scholastic esports talent in South Africa to date. Due to the generosity of the event’s sponsors, it has been possible to significantly boost the original announced prize pool. Over 300 participants from schools and universities across South Africa, as well as the general public, will compete in Fortnite (R25,000), Rocket League (R36,000) and EA FC (R25,000), for a total prize pool of R133,500. Additionally, R47,500 will be donated to a school in need of esports equipment, that participated in the ACGL School League, to invest in new equipment for their esports teams.

ACGL's Head of Educational Esport, Adam Thomas-James had the following to say: “AGC is the culmination of every branch of ACGL, bringing together schools (ASL), universities (AUL) and our public competitions. This can be seen as a landmark culmination of the past decade of operations. Our aim has always been to strengthen the community and by having all these different sectors present it creates a strong path for aspiring esports players to take.”

Of the various entities that have shown their support for this initiative, The Toyota Gaming Engine (TTGE) have pledged themselves as the main sponsor. Their commitment to furthering local esports initiatives and investing in youth talent is apparent through this partnership, and ACGL is optimistic at such dedicated entities showing such strong support for local esports opportunities.

The CURRO school group is an active entity within ASL, and another sponsor of AGC. Magdeleen de Kock, Curro Esports Project Lead, notes: “Curro Esports is proud to be a sponsor of the AGC LAN event, a pinnacle of competitive gaming in South Africa. We are dedicated to nurturing the talents of young gamers and providing them with the platforms they need to excel. The AGC event aligns perfectly with our vision of making esports accessible and fostering healthy competition among learners. By supporting events like these, we are not only contributing to the growth of esports but also empowering our learners with valuable skills and opportunities for future careers. We look forward to seeing the exceptional talent and sportsmanship that will undoubtedly be on display during this exciting event.”

Lesego Bobbi Nyamane, Marketing Manager for Acer, another valuable stakeholder in support of local scholastic esports and sponsor of Nitro ASL (and now AGC) comments: “Acer is delighted to be part of AGC. We are committed to supporting the growth of esports and are passionate about the sense of community, competition, and innovation. This event provides us with a unique opportunity to celebrate the vibrant esports culture and contribute to the expansion of this dynamic industry. We look forward to engaging with fans and building new connections within the esports community.”
